Above the Line

“Above the Line” (ATL) is budgetary classification that includes the costs associated with key creative and decision-making roles in a film or TV production. “Above the Line” comes from the traditional budgeting format, where key creative roles are listed at the top of the budget, separated from “Below the Line” costs which include crew salaries, equipment rental, catering, and other operational expenses.

Active Deal

A project or talent agreement that is currently in effect, with terms agreed upon by all parties.

Active Option

Holding the rights to a project or talent for a designated period, with the potential to develop or use them within that timeframe.

Agent

A professional representative who plays a pivotal role in representing and advocating for talent, such as actors, writers, directors, musicians, and other artists. Their primary objective is to help their clients secure opportunities, negotiate contracts, and advance their careers.

Awaiting Deal Closure

The phase where negotiations are complete, but the final agreement is pending execution or formalization.

Back-End

Compensation promised to key talent (like actors, directors, or producers) based on the project’s profits, usually after the film has recouped its initial investment.
